Lead Designer

Guildford, England   |   Full Time

Lead Game Designer

Role Description

We’re looking for an exceptional designer and manager to lead our growing and highly talented design team on one of our key free-to-play mobile projects.

To manage your team to success you’ll need to champion design and be able to speak to the smallest details with authority and in depth where needed — but without losing sight of the big picture and overall goals for the studio.

You will need to be an extraordinary communicator, not “only” able to convincingly lead your team but someone who can also clearly and comprehensively update and collaborate with the other discipline leads and studio directors where necessary.

Your excellent judgement — borne from experience — will help to ensure that your team get the support and mentoring they need in order to excel in their own development, while delivering your project to the highest quality at all times.

Also, you’ll need to be a decent and pleasant human being — we like working with those and have a good track record of hiring them so far.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the creation of full game design documentation for assigned projects
  • Identify and prioritize required feature specifications, set the standard for these specs, and review and sign off on all specifications from junior team members
  • Regularly review builds, keeping the team focussed on internal play testing to flag up and solve gameplay issues and opportunities
  • Have a strong understanding of product-focused industry trends to the extent you are confident leading the design and balance of the meta-systems and economies that sit behind our games
  • Create and approve high-level overviews of new designs and concepts to quickly convey ideas both internally AND externally
  • Work closely with Production, Engineering and Art to make project-critical decisions that ensure game quality is maintained without jeopardizing milestones
  • Attend regular publisher calls/meetings as the key representative for the design on your project. You will be comfortable managing publisher feedback with exemplary communication skills
  • Report on game progress regularly and articulately to internal stakeholders (directorate), calling out areas of success and concern far enough in advance that strategic solutions can be found
  • Assist in maintaining a project backlog during production and into live-operations, agreeing priorities with product and publishers in regular stakeholder settings
  • Support the junior designers on your team, managing their responsibilities to ensure they are able to develop essential skills, teaching both by face-to-face mentoring and ensuring your work is exemplary

Requirements

We are seeking an experienced game designer who can jump in and immediately get their hands dirty.

Ideally, you should have:

  • 5+ years game design experience within a studio environment (with at least 3+ years focused on Free-to-Play development)
  • Proficient in Word, Powerpoint and Excel (or Google equivalent!)
  • Exceptional understanding of game structure and systems
  • Exceptional ability to produce clear and workable documentation
  • Also able to create vision-orientated documentation to keep the team headed towards clear, shared goals
  • Wide knowledge base of past and present games, across all genres
  • Able to communicate your ideas clearly, concisely, and efficiently
  • Adaptable and able to quickly pick-up new skills and ways of working
  • Comfortable working closely with others and able to mentor creative team and individuals

First and foremost, this role is for our free-to-play mobile title, so it’s vital that you have a clear understanding and experience of developing free-to-play games!

It’s also worth noting that our longer-term plans in the studio include premium, PC & console orientated projects — so any additional experience and passion towards these areas are highly welcome.
